Year 3: Let’s be an archaeologist! How does an archaeologist help us find out from the past?
In this learning challenge we will be looking at the changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. In particular we will be studying the past societies of the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages. As archaeologists we will investigate questions like ‘What was life like in these times? What can we learn from past objects? What did the people look like and how did they live in these times? What can we find out about prehistoric sites from maps and aerial photographs? And finally, how are these sites being looked after?’
In English we will read together the story called ‘Stone Age Boy’, by Satoshi Kitamura. This book is about a little boy who is walking along when he trips, stumbles and falls… into the Stone Age! He meets a girl of his own age and her tribe, and learns about their way of life. He watches them make tools, clothes and weapons. He sees how they hunt, fish, cook, celebrate and even how they paint on the walls of caves. But when a furious cave bear attacks, he wakes up back in his own time, where everyone tells him it was only a dream. But was it? When reading this book we will pay attention to how the author has told the story and the natural themes he used to interest the reader. We will use the story to help us to realise the importance of planning and redrafting our work. We will also read a number of non-fiction texts about the Bronze and Iron ages to develop our skill of reading for information.
In Maths we will look at prehistoric paintings and structures to develop our mathematical skills relating to shape, space and measurement. Throughout this learning challenge we will also develop our skills of estimation, geometry, arithmetic and reasoning by looking at prehistoric images and artefacts.
In Science we identify that humans need the right types and amount of nutrition and that this comes from what they eat. We will compare and contrast the diet of early man with modern man. We will also focus on the similarities and differences between their skeletons. In addition, we will look at how the light source from the Sun affected the life of early man.
In Design and Technology, we will look at the design of prehistoric sites like Skara Brae and Stone Henge to understand how they have stood the test of time and we will make a replica model of one of these sites. While in Art and in Computing, we will use digital images to explore the paintings found in the caves of early man. We will then use their ideas and techniques to recreate some prehistoric art.
In Geography we will learn how to use maps, atlases, aerial photographs and digital maps to describe the location of key prehistoric sites in Britain and will use four figure grid references and the points of the compass to accurately describe their location in Britain. In History, we will study the Neolithic hunter- gathers and early farming, Bronze Age religion, technology and travel and Iron Age forts and the art and culture found within them. Using a timeline, we will able to identify when these prehistoric civilizations lived in Britain.
Finally, in Music we will recreate musical sounds of early man using tuned and untuned instruments and listen with attention and detail to pieces of music like ‘whispering Caverns’, by Creeping Carven Music.
